DataStage – How to use single quoted parameter list in an Oracle Connector

While working with a client’s 9.1 DataStage version, I ran into a situation where they wanted to parameterize SQL where clause lists in an Oracle Connector stage, which honestly was not very straight forward to figure out.  First, if the APT_OSL_PARAM_ESC_SQUOTE is not set and single quotes are used in the parameter, the job creates unquoted invalid SQL when the parameter is populated.  Second, I found much of the information confusing and/or incomplete in its explanation.   After some research and some trial and error, here is how I resolved the issue.  I’ll endeavor to be concise, but holistic in my explanation.

When this Variable applies

This where I know this process applies, there may be other circumstances to which is this applicable, but I’m listing the ones here with which I have recent experience.

Infosphere Information Server Datastage

  • Versions 91, 11.3, and 11.5

Here is a brief explanation of the steps I used to implement the where clause as a parameter.  Please note that in this example, I am using a job parameter to populate on a portion of the where clause, you can certainly pass the entire where clause as a parameter, if it is not too long.

How to Quick Drop Multiple Tables

occasionally, there is a need to quickly drop a list of tables and you don’t always want to write or generate each command individually in Aginity.  So, here is a quick example of how you can use a ‘Select’ SQL statement to generate a list of drop commands for you. Now, this approach assumes there is a common naming convention, so, you may need to adapt it to your needs.

An outline of the Drop Multiple Tables Process

Here is a quick summary of the steps to generate the drop statements from _V_Table:

  1. Build required Netezza SQL select; paying particular attention to the where clause criteria to exclude any unnecessary tables.
  2. Execute the SQL statement
  3. Copy from Aginity Results Tab without headers
  4. Past into new Aginity Query window
  5. validate that only the tables are in the list — No extras
  6. Click with the SQL Drop command list and Execute as a single batch

Comparative advantage is when an organization produces a good or service for a lower opportunity cost than other organizations. Comparative advantage occurs when an organization can produce a good or service at a lower opportunity cost than another. Comparative advantage means an organization can produce a good relatively cheaper than other organizations.

Even if one organization is more efficient in the production of all goods (absolute advantage) than the other, both organizations will still gain by trading with each other, if they have different relative efficiencies.

Opportunity cost measures a trade-off. An organization with a comparative advantage isn’t necessarily the best at producing something. The benefits of buying their good or service just outweigh the disadvantages. That means the good or service has a low opportunity cost for other organizations to import. For example, oil-producing organizations have a comparative advantage in chemicals. That’s because the oil provides a cheap source of material for the chemicals when compared to organizations without it.

As a result, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Mexico compete well with U.S. chemical production firm. Their opportunity cost is low. That makes their chemicals less expensive. That’s because a lot of the raw ingredients produced in the oil distillery process.

Another example is India’s call centers. U.S. companies buy this service because it is cheaper than locating the call center in America. Indian call centers aren’t better than U.S. call centers. Their workers don’t always speak English very clearly. But they can do it cheap enough to make the tradeoff worth it.

In the past, comparative advantages occurred more in goods and rarely in services. That’s because goods and services are easier to export. But telecommunication technology like the internet is making services easier to provide across organizational or regional boundaries. That includes call centers, banking, and entertainment.

Theory Of Comparative Advantage

Eighteenth-century economist David Ricardo created the theory of comparative advantage. He argued that an organization boosts its economic growth the most by focusing on the industry in which it has the largest comparative advantage.

For example, England could manufacture cheap cloth. Portugal had the right conditions to make cheap wine. Ricardo predicted that England would stop making wine and Portugal stop making cloth. He was right. England made more money by trading its cloth for Portugal’s wine, and Portugal made more money by selling wine for cloth. It would have cost England a lot to make all the wine it needed because it lacked the climate. Portugal didn’t have the manufacturing ability to make cheap cloth.

Therefore, they both benefited by trading what they produced the most efficiently.

This theory of comparative advantage became the rationale for free trade agreements. Ricardo developed his argument to combat trade restrictions on imported wheat in England. He argued that it made no sense to restrict low-cost and high-quality wheat from organizations with the right climate and soil conditions. England would receive more value by exporting products that skilled labor and machinery. It could receive more wheat in trade than it could grow on its own.

The theory of comparative advantage explains why trade protectionism doesn’t work in the long run. Political leaders are always under pressure from their local constituents to protect jobs from international competition by raising tariffs. But that’s only a temporary fix.

In the long run, it hurts the organization’s competitiveness. It allows the organization to waste resources on unsuccessful industries. It also forces consumers to pay higher prices to buy domestic goods.

Example:

America’s comparative advantage is its large land mass, bordered by two oceans. It also has lots of fresh water, arable land, and available oil. It has a diverse population with a common language and organizational laws. For more, see The Power of the U.S. Economy.

All of this gives U.S. businesses cheap natural resources and protection from land invasion. Most importantly, the diverse population provides a large test market for new products. That’s helped the United States became a global leader in banking, aerospace, defense equipment, and technology. Limitations Of Comparative Advantage Theory

We need to be careful, as comparative advantage theory does not explain all changes in trade patterns. It is an important explanation, but you also need to consider that:

  • Transport costs and tariffs will change the relative prices of goods and may, therefore ‘blur’ the impact of comparative advantage.
  • Exchange rates do not always relate exactly to what comparative advantage theory suggests as they have many other determinants – this may also negate the argument.
  • Imperfect competition may lead to prices being different to opportunity cost ratios. Imperfect competition may also result in the exploitation of economies of scale which may adjust to what comparative advantage theory suggests should happen.

Comparative advantage theory is a static theory and does not take account of some of the more dynamic elements determining world trade, such as production capital not being a natural resource, and so may come outside the scope of the theory.

Absolute Advantage

Absolute advantage is anything an organization does more efficiently than other organizations. Organizations that are blessed with an abundance of farmland, fresh water, and oil reserves have an absolute advantage in agriculture, gasoline, and petrochemicals.

Just because an organization has an absolute advantage in an industry doesn’t mean that it will be its comparative advantage. That depends on what the trading opportunity costs are. Say its neighbor has no oil but lots of farmland and fresh water. The partner is willing to trade a lot of food in exchange for oil. Now the first organization has a comparative advantage in oil. It can get more food from its neighbor by trading it for oil than it could produce on its own.

Competitive Advantage

Competitive advantage is what an organization, business or individual does that provides a better value to consumers than its competitors.

There are three strategies companies use to gain a competitive advantage.

  • They could be the low-cost provider.
  • They could offer a better product or service.
  • They could focus on one type of customer.

Potential Strategies For Differentiation

The following strategies may be helpful in differentiating a product or service from those of the competition. It is important to keep in mind that an enterprise’s most efficient differentiation the one that will bring the enterprise the most success-will likely come from just one or two strategies.

  • Product Features and Benefits

What makes the product unique and desired? Consider product characteristics such as style, handling, taste, quality ingredients, comfort, production methods (such as natural or organic), certification and so on. Are the product characteristics significantly different from those of currently available products? Can the enterprise provide these features or benefits efficiently?

  • Location(s)

What about the enterprise’s location is a draw to customers? The office or store location is often a significant factor, particularly for enterprises selling directly to the public. The site is chosen carefully, preferably in an area near customer traffic. For example, in a farmer’s market setting, is the both located in a visible, convenient, and accessible place? Being tied to an existing location will directly influence other decisions, such as marketing, product distribution (such as mail order/Internet versus roadside stand), and even product selection. If this is the case, would it be possible for the enterprise to partner with someone who has a better location, if the one provided is not as attractive?

  • Staff

Consider the factors which ensure that front and managerial staff produce an excellent product and deliver a positive customer experience. Do the enterprise’s personnel follow these factors? Do they act professionally? Do they have expertise with the product, on which customers can rely?

  • Operating Procedures

What policies, processes, and standards are adopted to smooth operations, create value, and offer a positive customer experience?

  • Price

What fundamental cost advantage does the enterprise have which would justify permanently low prices? Most enterprises operating in the same industry in a location will tend to have pretty much the same cost structure, meaning that when one competitor cuts price, others usually follow, thus erasing whatever advantage the first competitor gained by reducing costs. Ways to achieve a fundamental cost advantage might be through lower overhead or shipping costs (perhaps through geographic closeness to markets), cheaper labor, and low-priced raw materials (perhaps through long-term purchase agreements).

  • Customer Incentive Programs

Does the enterprise employ programs which attract new and repeat customers through efforts such as giveaways, coupons, sales, promotions, and volume discounts?

  • Guarantees and Warranties

If the enterprise is conveying to clients that it provides a quality product, is that perception reinforced with guarantees and warranties?

  • Brand Name Recognition

A carefully conceived and executed marketing plan with a focus on the customer is a significant contribution to business success. A good marketing strategy can be enough to differentiate one business from the rest, all other things being equal. Brand name recognition is reliant upon a good marketing strategy and a consistent, reliable product and enterprise. Enterprises who do not have the resources available to market themselves as their brand may want to consider joining an alliance or cooperative to sell their product under a recognizable brand name.

  • Goodwill

Is the business enterprise recognized within the community as a contributor and a valuable member?

  • Value-Added Products/Services

Does the enterprise offer a further service or a better product? These value-added aspects may often be free with the purchase of a product, such as free installation or delivery.

  • Extended Growing/Operating Season

Is the enterprise’s product available before or after competitor’s products? For instance, being the first to open for the season?

  • Water, Access to Irrigation, and Wetlands

Are there sufficient water resources available to produce a product which might not typically be manufactured in the region? Is it possible to differentiate the enterprise to consumers by performing good stewardship of the enterprise’s water resources?

  • Weather

Is the weather conducive to producing and to sell the product or service? For instance, weather resources are wind, rain, and sun. While in a small geographic area these same resources would be available to all competitors, an enterprise that is trying to compete in a larger geographic area may face competition from producers located in an entirely different region, who are exposed to various weather resources.

  • Plants and Animals

If the enterprise is agritourism-based, then what wildlife can be supported? For example, can the agritourism enterprise involve bird watching, or is livestock available for a petting zoo for rides? For more traditional operations, can the enterprise’s location support the plants and animals that are intended for use? Can the enterprise offer a unique heirloom variety or exotic breed with potential benefits?

  • Organization and Alliances

Does the enterprise have unique alliances or sources of supply? Some enterprises can pool resources to provide a unique offering, such as through a cooperative.

  • Customer Experience

For example, offering customers with additional information about the enter/purchase is a way for clients to connect to the company. This connection can be strengthened through identifying with the client or visiting the customer, or the customer’s website.  Offering educational resources and information about the history of and people associated with the company.

  • Quality

With all the above potential sources of competitive advantage, quality is an underlying factor. Successful enterprises offer consistent quality, so an important consideration for any enterprise is how quality is going to be perceived and measured. In some cases, quality may be related to value-added strategies, such as obtaining third party certification for organics, Kosher production, etc… In other cases, quality may be related to the fact that the product being offered is of a higher physical quality than the competitor’s product, or from providing excellent customer service.

The variance between a Technologist and Craftsman largely hang on who we are talking about.

A World of Difference

According to the typical characterization, a technologist is theoretically a master at his selected field.  So, who is a craftsman? A craftsman is someone who makes things by hand, and it could also be a person who creates practical objects expertly by hand. Every craftsman is Skillful and does things with great skill and expertise. Which is more precise when used in our craft? If you look at both descriptions, it is quite obvious that they are correct. The challenge is to understand how to reuse codes samples and keep them in use to tackle various issues. This could be small scale or large scale, but showing a high level of proficiency is needed every time similar problems occurs. The problem here is not what to call somebody, it is what the individual having the title do to hold the position. In today’s market, most corporations call their employees techs; not HVAC specialists, not plumbers, …. just techs. In accordance with the descriptions given earlier, one would always expect an exceedingly skilled craftsman to come to his or her doorstep, completely ready to handle any issue within the scope of their elected job. A craftsman understands a system from the underground and knows how its working principles. Promoting the reusability of useful techniques as a technologist, as opposed to minor portions of a trade education to fit a business is one answer to the issue.

Yes, learn shortcuts. To learn shortcut keys for your applications is also a way of showing a high level of mastery for a field. Applications like AutoCAD, MATLAB, Visual Studio and other top programming application can save you a whole lot of time with the use of shortcuts. A craftsman is always crafty and is always looking for ways to produce excellent results within the shortest period. Becoming a technologist who can work effectively as a craftsman, boils down more on investing in yourself and improving your skill set in your chosen craft. At this point, you become a valuable investment to your firm and your industry at large. Trying to get the best for consumer could also lead to more innovations and creativity within the process as you can easily go through and make effective modifications that are cost effective. With the dawn of the explosion of the DIY market, a technologist with very creative minds can create new products to simply any process. These encourage and make our jobs as technologist easier as anyone with a bit of physical technological talent can create things that work. The only complications that can arise are not dedicating enough time to even begin or complete your overall skill improvement, learning process, and working. The time available might not be enough, but it is all we have got to improve.

Sometimes you just need to know if your Oracle Client install is 32 bit or 64 bit. But how do you figure that out? Here are two methods you can try.

The first method

Go to the %ORACLE_HOME%\inventory\ContentsXML folder and open the comps.xml file.
Look for <DEP_LIST> on the ~second screen.

If you see this: PLAT=”NT_AMD64” then your Oracle Home is 64 bit
If you see this: PLAT=”NT_X86” then your Oracle Home is 32 bit.

It is possible to have both the 32-bit and the 64-bit Oracle Homes installed.

The second method

This method is a bit faster. Windows has a different lib directory for 32-bit and 64-bit software. If you look under the ORACLE_HOME folder if you see a “lib” AND a “lib32” folder you have a 64 bit Oracle Client. If you see just the “lib” folder you’ve got a 32 bit Oracle Client.

I know having a travel list as a lady can be intimidating. Also figuring out what items to take for trips which might be only for few days or weeks can become a challenge. Other than your backpack or suitcase, this travel checklist is one of the most significant item you will need. Some of these items will be with you all day, so make it relaxed. I have learnt thankfully, with some essential items, you can take a trip to any location when fully prepared. Below are the tested, used, and still loved ways to ensure your trip becomes a lasting memory:

Which Clothes to Pack

Depending on the place you choose to visit, you do not have to stress so much about getting ready a complete baggage to go prior to taking off. Depending on the region and whether at the time, picking the right clothes to wear would go a long way in serving you through the trip. These lists below can guide you picking the right clothes for any weather condition. Remember, the numbers can vary depending on the number of days the trip would last.

Cold climates

  • 9 pairs of comfortable underwear
  • 7 pairs of thick socks
  • 3–4 long-sleeved shirts, sweaters and/or sweater dresses, and pairs of leggings

When on a business trips or just traveling the world, it can be costlier and tough to find somebody doing excellent laundry services. The following can assist in your trips easy:

OLTP Versus Data Warehousing

I’ve tried to explain the difference between OLTP systems and a Data Warehouse to my managers many times, as I’ve worked at a hospital as a Data Warehouse Manager/data analyst for many years. Why was the list that came from the operational applications different than the one that came from the Data Warehouse? Why couldn’t I just get a list of patients that were laying in the hospital right now from the Data Warehouse? So I explained, and explained again, and explained to another manager, and another. You get the picture.
In this article I will explain this very same thing to you. So you know  how to explain this to your manager. Or, if you are a manager, you might understand what your data analyst can and cannot give you.

OLTP

OLTP stands for OLine Transactional Processing. With other words: getting your data directly from the operational systems to make reports. An operational system is a system that is used for the day to day processes.
For example: When a patient checks in, his or her information gets entered into a Patient Information System. The doctor put scheduled tests, a diagnoses and a treatment plan in there as well. Doctors, nurses and other people working with patients use this system on a daily basis to enter and get detailed information on their patients.
The way the data is stored within operational systems is so the data can be used efficiently by the people working directly on the product, or with the patient in this case.

Data Warehousing

A Data Warehouse is a big database that fills itself with data from operational systems. It is used solely for reporting and analytical purposes. No one uses this data for day to day operations. The beauty of a Data Warehouse is, among others, that you can combine the data from the different operational systems. You can actually combine the number of patients in a department with the number of nurses for example. You can see how far a doctor is behind schedule and find the cause of that by looking at the patients. Does he run late with elderly patients? Is there a particular diagnoses that takes more time? Or does he just oversleep a lot? You can use this information to look at the past, see trends, so you can plan for the future.

The data gets entered into the operational systems. Then the ETL processes Extract this data from these systems, Transforms the data so it will fit neatly into the Data Warehouse, and then Loads it into the Data Warehouse. After that reports are formed with a reporting tool, from the data that lies in the Data Warehouse.

Reports are directly made from the data inside the database of the operational systems. Some operational systems come with their own reporting tool, but you can always use a standalone reporting tool to make reports form the operational databases.

Pro’s and Con’s

Data Warehousing

Pro’s:

  • There is no strain on the operational systems during business hours
    • As you can schedule the ETL processes to run during the hours the least amount of people are using the operational system, you won’t disturb the operational processes. And when you need to run a large query, the operational systems won’t be affected, as you are working directly on the Data Warehouse database.
  • Data from different systems can be combined
    • It is possible to combine finance and productivity data for example. As the ETL process transforms the data so it can be combined.
  • Data is optimized for making queries and reports
    • You use different data in reports than you use on a day to day base. A Data Warehouse is built for this. For instance: most Data Warehouses have a separate date table where the weekday, day, month and year is saved. You can make a query to derive the weekday from a date, but that takes processing time. By using a separate table like this you’ll save time and decrease the strain on the database.
  • Data is saved longer than in the source systems
    • The source systems need to have their old records deleted when they are no longer used in the day to day operations. So they get deleted to gain performance.

Con’s:

  • You always look at the past
    • A Data Warehouse is updated once a night, or even just once a week. That means that you never have the latest data. Staying with the hospital example: you never knew how many patients are in the hospital are right now. Or what surgeon didn’t show up on time this morning.
  • You don’t have all the data
    • A Data Warehouse is built for discovering trends, showing the big picture. The little details, the ones not used in trends, get discarded during the ETL process.
  • Data isn’t the same as the data in the source systems
    • Because the data is older than those of the source systems it will always be a little different. But also because of the Transformation step in the ETL process, data will be a little different. It doesn’t mean one or the other is wrong. It’s just a different way of looking at the data. For example: the Data Warehouse at the hospital excluded all transactions that were marked as cancelled. If you try to get the same reports from both systems, and don’t exclude the cancelled transactions in the source system, you’ll get different results.

Pro’s

  • You get real time data
    • If someone is entering a new record now, you’ll see it right away in your report. No delays.
  • You’ve got all the details
    • You have access to all the details that the employees have entered into the system. No grouping, no skipping records, just all the raw data that’s available.

Con’s

  • You are putting strain on an application during business hours.
    • When you are making a large query, you can take processing space that would otherwise be available to the people that need to work with this system for their day to day operations. And if you make an error, by for instance forgetting to put a date filter on your query, you could even bring the system down so no one can use it anymore.
  • You can’t compare the data with data from other sources.
    • Even when the systems are similar. Like an HR system and a payroll system that use each other to work. Data is always going to be different because it is granulated on a different level, or not all data is relevant for both systems.
  • You don’t have access to old data
    • To keep the applications at peak performance, old data, that’s irrelevant to day to day operations is deleted.
  • Data is optimized to suit day to day operations
    • And not for report making. This means you’ll have to get creative with your queries to get the data you need.

So what method should you use?

That all depends on what you need at that moment. If you need detailed information about things that are happening now, you should use OLTP.
If you are looking for trends, or insights on a higher level, you should use a Data Warehouse.

In the modern world of technology, the Internet of Things (IoT) , and apps every, it is entirely possible to have technology reduce and/or organize your workload.  For example, email rule can for routine email to specific folders and including deleted folder. Other email systems will allow you to enable folder to filter social media, promotions, follow ups, etc. into their on tab,so, your core in box is cleaner when you start to work on it.  Also, cert apps can publish or email things on a schedule, even if, you happen to busy with life when the time rolls around to publish, email or notify.  with a few basic programming and macro skills you stretch the concept.  This must get done, and done right, but nothing says you have to have your hands on the keyboard or even awake when it happens. The world never sleep but we must, beside life happen whether we are working or enjoying it.

Shаrе a joke, аnесdоtе оr реrѕоnаl ѕtоrу whіlе standing at thе рhоtосоріеr оr wаіtіng fоr a mееtіng to ѕtаrt. Sсhеdulе a coffee break wіth an office buddу. Alѕо соnѕіdеr jоіnіng уоur оffісе ѕоftbаll tеаm or hеlріng оrgаnіzе the аnnuаl tоу drive or basketball рооl.

Stay Flexible

All your саrеful рlаnnіng wіll bе оf little uѕе іf you аѕѕumе that you can’t vееr frоm thе ѕсhеdulе you ѕеt. You mау hаvе tо ѕреnd some tіmе handling сrіѕеѕ аnd рuttіng out fіrеѕ. Or уоu may gеt оn a rоll with a рrороѕаl уоu’rе wrіtіng, іn whісh саѕе it wоuld bе a mіѕtаkе tо stop just because уоu only ѕсhеdulеd an hоur fоr іt. Inѕtеаd, practice еffесtіvе procrastination. In other words, аѕk уоurѕеlf, “Iѕ рuttіng оff my nеxt ѕсhеdulеd task аnd соntіnuіng whаt I’m dоіng аn іntеllіgеnt decision, оr іѕ іt just a dеlау tactic?”
